I was challenged in a song writing workshop to write a hymn. Hymns to me are heavily grounded in scripture, and they retain a certain complexity. But it's also important to remember that I come from the South, and my people are country people. What I ended up with was a country hymn that comes mostly out of the Magnificat. I think the lyrics and the sound coalesce into a grassroots, last-shall-be-first kind of vibe.
lyrics
From on high, your love reached down to us / You regarded our helpless plea / Up from ashes, let our song ring out / Might God you have done great things // Now we know your sweet salvation / We are forgiven and we're redeemed / Tender mercies from the Holy One guide our feet along ways of peace
Let your glory cover all the earth / Your unfailing love reaches far / Grace abounds to those who know your name when we recognize who you are // Like the sunrise breaking over us, come and visit us with your love / Those who sit in death's dark shadow have seen the light of the risen sun
Now we're mindful fo your mercy
Our song of praise resounds
We're held within your strong hands
We're favored and we're found
You're the one my soul will glorify / I'll rejoice as my spirit sings / Cause your light to cascade over the simple offering that I bring // All the proud at heart you've scattered / You've brought our rollers down from their thrones / But the humble hearts you've lifted up, satisfying our thirsty souls
Oh Jesus, son of heaven
Our advocate and friend
Send your holy spirit
To revive our hearts again
